“Spider-man wouldn’t survive in Europe. Too many cable lines.”
The witty quotation above was uttered by my dear husband as we observed the streets of Munich, the first stop following our arrival into Germany. On July 10th, we flew out of Chicago O’Hare at 9:20 p.m. and landed at the Munich airport at 1:00 p.m. the following day. There, we merged with the rest of our tour group (43 persons in all). Our tour guide, Sue, took us on a bus tour of Munich. Below are some pictures of the various monuments we saw. If you go to our map and click on "Munich," you will find many more photos from the tour.
We saw many historic buildings from the second World War, such as the Konigsplatz “King’s Square” (see above photo). This location was featured in a film depicting the Hitler Youth’s march to Nuremburg. We also drove right past the Olympic Headquarters, which hosted the 1972 Olympics. 18 Israeli athletes were held hostage by Palestinian terrorists. In spite of efforts to save the hostages, the athletes were tragically assassinated.
We had no time to dally in Munich because we needed to get to Salzburg, Austria before traffic got too heavy. The drive to Salzburg was stunning as we beheld the Alpine landscape through our jetlagged eyeballs.
We checked into the Hotel Mozart right before supper. In the photo below, you can see our mascot, Rocky the Traveling Raccoon, hanging out in our hotel room. We dined at the hotel and ate some delicious weinerschnitzel and peach kuken. After the long plane ride, we were definitely ready for a good night’s sleep!
